Upcoming events at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe

First I'd like to mention the first event which does not even require you to leave your home.  You may know the United States primary patron(ess) is the Immaculate Conception(hence the whole Holy Day of Obligation thing).  Fr. John Hardon highly recommended making the novena and now you can do it with reflections from one of today's best Mariologists.   I will be posting 'em on this blog starting next Tuesday as well.
Please join Fr. Peter Damian Fehlner of the Franciscans of the Immaculate and Rector of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse, Wisconsin, in a virtual Novena in honor of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary at www.airmaria.com . Each day, from the 29th of November up to the 7th of December, Fr. Peter gives a short meditation on the Immaculate Conception followed by a prayer. Perhaps you can suggest some intentions (for family, for loved ones, for end to abortion, contraception, etc.).
The Cardinal will be comin' town.  .... great now I have Christmas carols stuck in my head.  No!  Waaaait for it....
December 3 - Saint Nicholas of Myra: A Celebration for Children – starting at 1:30 p.m.

Meet and take pictures with St. Nicholas and hear the story of Christmas and the life of this beloved saint and wonderworker. Afterwards enjoy hot cocoa and cookies, coloring and a movie about his life. Children of all ages are welcome.

December 9 - Feast of St. Juan Diego – Celebrate with His Eminence Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke

The Feast of Saint Juan Diego begins will Holy Mass at 12:15 p.m. celebrated by His Eminence Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke. After Mass there will be an induction ceremony for the Saint Juan Diego Guild for Children followed by a reception with refreshments and dessert in the crypt.

December 12 – Patronal Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe – Celebrate with the Founder of the Shrine, His Eminence Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke

Celebrate the patronal feast of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe with His Eminence Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke. The Shrine opens at 8:00 a.m. Mañanitas, or traditional Mexican songs sung in the morning on special days, begin at 8:45 a.m. Sweet breads and refreshments will follow in the crypt. Cardinal Burke will be the main celebrant at Holy Mass at 11:00 a.m.

A few Cistercian items stay in the state

I was glad to hear that some private donors stepped forward to purchase some of the Cisterican vestments during the auction and keep them in the area.

Marian Symposium at Guadalupe Shrine

Apparently I've been slacking.  These photos are from the Marian Symposium hosted at the Guadalupe Shrine a few weeks ago.  As I said before, this is thee conference to attend at the Shrine.  I met Mother Miriam(formerly Rosalind Moss of Catholic Answers), what a fantastic lady.  I did not realize she was not able to found her order in the Arch. St. Louis, but Bishop Slattery welcomed her to Tulsa OK recently.  Although she still does appear on Catholic Answers Live, I told her I missed her since Relevant Radio will not carry the program.  I've thought of getting XM Radio to pick it up on EWTN radio.  Okay, what else, oh, I love Bishop Ricken btw.  Ah, and Dr. Miravalle is a deacon?  I had no idea, he assisted at Mass.  He didn't assist last year so this was news to me.

Side note: The Friars are offering a Low Mass for All Saints & All Souls Day next week, both at 5:30 pm.

Holy Spirit!

You never know what to expect of prayer, especially when praying with a large group, and most especially when that prayer involves Mass.

I was at Mass today at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe . The chapel was packed. The Shrine was hosting a convention for health care providers (which I had been unaware of) and Bishop Callhan was there to celebrate. It was great to see so many people worshipping on a Saturday afternoon.

Everything moved on as expected until after the Eucharistic prayers were ended. Within moments, while my head was still bowed in prayer, I was surprised by a blare of noise and bright flashing lights.

It was the fire alarm.

In a moment that made me proud to be one with my Catholic brothers and sisters, nobody moved. There was no way. It was almost time to receive Eucharist. God would take care of us.

The alarm continued for a bit, but still we waited. When it was finally silenced, Mass resumed as though nothing had happened.

After Mass, the Bishop couldn’t resist. He turned to us and said, “I always tell people to pray with intensity to bring down the fire of the Holy Spirit. You did it!”

I guess we did.

Leaving, I saw a fireman. I wondered how frustrated he must’ve been when nobody would leave.

Maybe he’s Catholic. If he is, he understands.

CatholicSpirt: La Crosse Guadalupe Shrine "A sanctuary for the soul"

From left, Caroline and Anna Priore of
St. Pius V in Cannon Falls pray at the shrine.

Two busloads of teens from St. Pius V in Cannon Falls pulled into the parking lot of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse, Wis., the morning of Sept. 11.

The sun lit up the beautiful structures and gardens nestled in the blufflands of western Wisconsin.

After their three-hour ride, the 51 seventh- through 12th-graders were antsy to get out and climb the paved path leading to the church, the shrine’s crown jewel.

The peaceful and prayerful atmosphere of the place turned their high energy into serious reflection, as the youth marveled at the scenery before them.

“It’s really beautiful,” said Anna Priore, a home-schooled high school senior who came with her sister, Caroline, a junior. “I knew something nice was going to happen,” she said on the ride home.

One of the pleasant surprises of her visit came when she learned of an altar inside the church containing a relic of her confirmation saint, Maria Goretti. “There was a beautiful painting of her, too,” Anna said. “It almost moved me to tears.”

The experience had a similar impact on Caroline, who said it confirmed her desire to be a nun someday. She watched a video on the bus ride down that mentioned a collection to build a home for contemplative sisters.

“It’s the perfect place [for such a home],” Caroline said. “I’ve always felt like I’d like to join a convent someday. . . .”

Such anecdotes are music to the ears of trip organizer Debbie Bauer, who runs the faith formation program for youth at the parish. And, no doubt, she will pass along the stories to the anonymous donor who covered the cost of the bus ride for the youth.

During a parish staff meeting, Bauer said, “we were concentrating on the Blessed Mother, and the doorbell rang. I went to the door and there was a gentleman who goes to Mass here. He gave me a check for $2,000 and said, ‘You get coach buses and you take the faith formation kids down to Our Lady of Guadalupe shrine.’

“It was holy goosebump time,” she added.

Marian Symposium at Guadalupe Shrine

I mentioned it a while back but I got word there is still room at this event.  It's going to be a gorgeous time of the year to visit the Shrine with the autumn leaves and all that jazz.  Plus it is very significant to have Bishop Ricken as the main celebrant and the special connection Wisconsin shares with Our Lady.  That is not to even mention the star studded lineup.  The Marian Symposium the past few years has been thee event to attend at the Shrine for myself.

Guadalupe Shrine pilgrim shares experience

Last week, our family was blessed to visit the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in LaCrosse, WI.  The shrine was founded by Cardinal Raymond L. Burke, himself a Wisconsin native.  Nestled gently in the hills of LaCrosse, my impression of the Shrine was, “everything is done very well.”  From the most intricate details of the murals in the Church within the shrine, to the garden surrounding the Memorial to the Unborn, a tremendous amount of prayer and thought were put into the shrine.

The main chapel of the shrine is located at the top of a hill of LaCrosse but the path up to the main chapel is delightful and prayerful.  The first stop is at the votive chapel.  The chapel has a tower of candles, 576 candles, which is the largest in the US.  Around the edge of the chapel are various stained glass windows of our lady; Our Lady of Fatima, Our Lady of Knock, Our Mother of good Counsel, Our Lady of Sorrows, Our Lady of Loretto, Our Lady of Lourdes and Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal.  Candles can be ordered to be lit online at the above link.  The limestone of the chapel is from Wisconsin and the stained glass were crafted in Minnesota.  The shrine is entirely Catholic and also Midwestern in very tangible ways.

A few photos from the Guadalupe Shrine Patronal Weekend

Sorry, I'm kind of a glutton when it comes to taking photos and apparently slothful in posting these.  Bishop Sample of Marquette, MI in the house with Bishop Joseph Madera of the Queen of Americas Guild.  Also the Friars of the Immaculate broadcasting the event, along with providing Adoration and Liturgy of the Hours.. I wish I had time to come up every day for that.  You may have seen this cool video they posted.  BTW, the Shrine looks very nice with the dedication candles lit on the walls.  The photos really didn't do it justice.

AirMaria: Assumption Novena - Day 6

Getting closer.....

Rev 12:
And a great sign appeared in heaven: A woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars:

And being with child, she cried travailing in birth, and was in pain to be delivered.

And there was seen another sign in heaven: and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads, and ten horns: and on his head seven diadems:

And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to be delivered; that, when she should be delivered, he might devour her son.

And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with an iron rod: and her son was taken up to God, and to his throne.

The Devil is abroad: Milwaukee diocesan priest charged with assaulting teen in La Crosse

A criminal charge accuses a Wisconsin priest of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl earlier this week while he was in La Crosse for a canon law conference.

The Rev. David Szatkowski, 37, of Franklin, Wis., grabbed the teen's breast outside the downtown Radisson late Monday or early Tuesday, according to the complaint filed today in La Crosse County Circuit Court.

She told police a drunken man approached her group of friends and put his arms around her shoulders before groping her, the complaint states. One of her friends snapped a picture of the man on a cell phone.

Two witnesses described the man, who said he was a lawyer, as being "very touchy" before he grabbed the teen when she tried to give him a high five, the complaint states. He retreated to the hotel when the girls confronted him.

A staff member told police a group of people attending a canon law conference for canonists and civil attorneys at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe were staying in the hotel. The two-day conference is hosted by Cardinal Raymond Burke and is not associated with the Diocese of La Crosse.

Szatkowski identified himself in the cell phone picture after investigators found him at the conference, according to the complaint.

He told investigators he was staying at the Radisson and had several drinks during the evening. He remembered talking to a group of students for about an hour outside the hotel but denied assaulting the teen, according to the complaint. He refused more questions without an attorney.

Szatkowski appeared in court Wednesday, where prosecutors charged him with second-degree sexual assault of a child under 16 years of age.

....  I'll cover as the story unfolds.

AirMaria: Assumption Novena - Day 1

Sorry for the late notice. It snuck up on us but it starts today - Saturday. If you miss it by a few days, don't worry about it. Start it when you start it.

Here's a link to the video on AirMaria. The novena prayer is part of the video, which is only about 6 minutes; meditation + prayer(the prayer shows up on screen). I can't embed it cause I cant figure out how to embed their videos without autoplaying them.

Here's the text of the prayer.

Priest: A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.

People: O Immaculate Virgin, Mother of God and Mother of men, we believe with all the fervor of our faith in Your Triumphal Assumption into heaven, where You are acclaimed as Queen by all the choirs of angels and legion of saints. We unite with them to praise and bless the Lord who has exalted You above all other pure creatures, and to offer You the tribute of our devotion and our love.

From the shadows of this valley of tears, we seek Your heavenly assistance and tender mercy, to comfort our aching hearts and to help in the trials of the Church and of our country. Accept the intentions we offer you in this novena, and be pleased to grant them according to our need and according to the good pleasure of Your Son, for we are confident that in the glory where You reign, You continue Your manifold intercession to bring us celestial gifts. In the glory which you possess in body and soul in heaven is the image and beginning of the Church as it is to be perfected in the world to come. Until the day of the Lord shall come, continue to shine forth on earth as a sign of certain hope and comfort for all your children, O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

Priest: Let us pray. Almighty everlasting God, who assumed to celestial glory the body and soul of your Son’s Mother, the Immaculate Virgin Mary, grant, we beg You, that , being ever intent upon heavenly things, we may merit to share in her glory. We ask through Christ our Lord.
People: Amen.

Priest: Queen assumed into heaven.

People: Pray for us.

Guadalupe Shrine now affiliated with Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome

St. Mary Major, Rome
LA CROSSE, WI (August 4, 2011) - His Eminence Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke, Founder of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, announced on July 31 that the Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI has affiliated the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse to his Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome.

With this affiliation comes the opportunity for pilgrims visiting the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe to gain plenary indulgences, under the usual conditions. The announcement came on the third anniversary of the dedication of the Shrine Church.

“Today, we also have a particular cause to rejoice because our Holy Father has affiliated, has bonded, this church to his Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major, the great pilgrimage church of Rome, dedicated to the honor of the Mother of God," said Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke.

"With the affiliation comes a most generous grant of indulgences, so that pilgrims to this church of Our Lady of Guadalupe may draw more fully upon the rich treasury of the merits of the Passion and Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and of His Sorrowful Mother and of all the saints who have shared with Him, to an heroic degree, in His Suffering and Dying,” continued Cardinal Burke. “In gratitude, let us pray, in a special way today, for the intentions of our Holy Father. Let us also hasten to draw upon his rich gift to us for the sake of the salvation of souls, especially the souls of our brothers and sisters in Purgatory.”

A plenary indulgence is the entire remission of temporal punishment due to sin, the guilt of which has been forgiven.

“This is an extraordinary gift from our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI to pilgrims visiting the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe,” said Eugene J. Diamond, Director of Communications and Development. “Now the faithful from near and far who visit the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe on organized pilgrimage, and other specific solemnities and feasts during the year, may obtain a plenary indulgence.”

Plenary indulgences may be gained at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe:

1. On the patronal feast day of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome: August 5[That would be today folks.  The Shrine is open until 7pm], with which the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe is now affiliated;

2. On the patronal feast day of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse: December 12;

3. On all solemnities of the Virgin Mother of God: January 1, March 25, August 15, December 8;

4. On any day chosen by a pilgrim once a year; [Such as a baptismal anniversary]

5. As many times during the year as the faithful are part of an organized pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse for the purposes of devotion, reform of life, growth in holiness and greater communion with the Holy Father and all the members of the Church through the intercession of the Virgin Mother of God and Mother of the Church, each of the participants in the pilgrimage may gain a plenary indulgence.

Conditions for gaining the Plenary Indulgence: visit to the Shrine Church, sacramental Confession (within eight days of fulfilling the other conditions), Holy Communion (within eight days of fulfilling the other conditions) and prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father (e.g., Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be; or the Creed and an Our Father) during the visit to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
