Upcoming events at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe

First I'd like to mention the first event which does not even require you to leave your home.  You may know the United States primary patron(ess) is the Immaculate Conception(hence the whole Holy Day of Obligation thing).  Fr. John Hardon highly recommended making the novena and now you can do it with reflections from one of today's best Mariologists.   I will be posting 'em on this blog starting next Tuesday as well.
Please join Fr. Peter Damian Fehlner of the Franciscans of the Immaculate and Rector of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse, Wisconsin, in a virtual Novena in honor of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary at www.airmaria.com . Each day, from the 29th of November up to the 7th of December, Fr. Peter gives a short meditation on the Immaculate Conception followed by a prayer. Perhaps you can suggest some intentions (for family, for loved ones, for end to abortion, contraception, etc.).
The Cardinal will be comin' town.  .... great now I have Christmas carols stuck in my head.  No!  Waaaait for it....
December 3 - Saint Nicholas of Myra: A Celebration for Children – starting at 1:30 p.m.

Cardinal Burke at Limerick Ireland

On September 12, His Eminence Raymond Cardinal Burke offered Pontifical Low Mass in St. Patrick’s Church, Limerick, where the Institute offers Holy Mass each Sunday. The Lassus Scholars sang motets for this beautiful Liturgy at which His Eminence was assisted by the Canons and seminarians of the Institute, as well as clergy and servers from the local area.

That same afternoon, Cardinal Burke came to the Institute’s residence near the city of Limerick at St. Joseph’s House in Granagh. His Eminence blessed the new house chapel, where the faithful can attend the daily celebration of Holy Mass, and the large statue of Saint Joseph in the house garden. A good number of the Limerick faithful came for this event, as well as friends from the local clergy of the Limerick diocese.

CatholicSpirt: La Crosse Guadalupe Shrine "A sanctuary for the soul"

From left, Caroline and Anna Priore of
St. Pius V in Cannon Falls pray at the shrine.

Two busloads of teens from St. Pius V in Cannon Falls pulled into the parking lot of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse, Wis., the morning of Sept. 11.

The sun lit up the beautiful structures and gardens nestled in the blufflands of western Wisconsin.

After their three-hour ride, the 51 seventh- through 12th-graders were antsy to get out and climb the paved path leading to the church, the shrine’s crown jewel.

The peaceful and prayerful atmosphere of the place turned their high energy into serious reflection, as the youth marveled at the scenery before them.

“It’s really beautiful,” said Anna Priore, a home-schooled high school senior who came with her sister, Caroline, a junior. “I knew something nice was going to happen,” she said on the ride home.

One of the pleasant surprises of her visit came when she learned of an altar inside the church containing a relic of her confirmation saint, Maria Goretti. “There was a beautiful painting of her, too,” Anna said. “It almost moved me to tears.”

The experience had a similar impact on Caroline, who said it confirmed her desire to be a nun someday. She watched a video on the bus ride down that mentioned a collection to build a home for contemplative sisters.

“It’s the perfect place [for such a home],” Caroline said. “I’ve always felt like I’d like to join a convent someday. . . .”

Such anecdotes are music to the ears of trip organizer Debbie Bauer, who runs the faith formation program for youth at the parish. And, no doubt, she will pass along the stories to the anonymous donor who covered the cost of the bus ride for the youth.

During a parish staff meeting, Bauer said, “we were concentrating on the Blessed Mother, and the doorbell rang. I went to the door and there was a gentleman who goes to Mass here. He gave me a check for $2,000 and said, ‘You get coach buses and you take the faith formation kids down to Our Lady of Guadalupe shrine.’

“It was holy goosebump time,” she added.

A few photos from the Guadalupe Shrine Patronal Weekend

Sorry, I'm kind of a glutton when it comes to taking photos and apparently slothful in posting these.  Bishop Sample of Marquette, MI in the house with Bishop Joseph Madera of the Queen of Americas Guild.  Also the Friars of the Immaculate broadcasting the event, along with providing Adoration and Liturgy of the Hours.. I wish I had time to come up every day for that.  You may have seen this cool video they posted.  BTW, the Shrine looks very nice with the dedication candles lit on the walls.  The photos really didn't do it justice.

Guadalupe Shrine now affiliated with Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome

St. Mary Major, Rome
LA CROSSE, WI (August 4, 2011) - His Eminence Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke, Founder of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, announced on July 31 that the Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI has affiliated the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse to his Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome.

With this affiliation comes the opportunity for pilgrims visiting the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe to gain plenary indulgences, under the usual conditions. The announcement came on the third anniversary of the dedication of the Shrine Church.

“Today, we also have a particular cause to rejoice because our Holy Father has affiliated, has bonded, this church to his Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major, the great pilgrimage church of Rome, dedicated to the honor of the Mother of God," said Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke.

"With the affiliation comes a most generous grant of indulgences, so that pilgrims to this church of Our Lady of Guadalupe may draw more fully upon the rich treasury of the merits of the Passion and Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and of His Sorrowful Mother and of all the saints who have shared with Him, to an heroic degree, in His Suffering and Dying,” continued Cardinal Burke. “In gratitude, let us pray, in a special way today, for the intentions of our Holy Father. Let us also hasten to draw upon his rich gift to us for the sake of the salvation of souls, especially the souls of our brothers and sisters in Purgatory.”

A plenary indulgence is the entire remission of temporal punishment due to sin, the guilt of which has been forgiven.

“This is an extraordinary gift from our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI to pilgrims visiting the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe,” said Eugene J. Diamond, Director of Communications and Development. “Now the faithful from near and far who visit the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe on organized pilgrimage, and other specific solemnities and feasts during the year, may obtain a plenary indulgence.”

Plenary indulgences may be gained at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe:

1. On the patronal feast day of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome: August 5[That would be today folks.  The Shrine is open until 7pm], with which the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe is now affiliated;

2. On the patronal feast day of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse: December 12;

3. On all solemnities of the Virgin Mother of God: January 1, March 25, August 15, December 8;

4. On any day chosen by a pilgrim once a year; [Such as a baptismal anniversary]

5. As many times during the year as the faithful are part of an organized pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse for the purposes of devotion, reform of life, growth in holiness and greater communion with the Holy Father and all the members of the Church through the intercession of the Virgin Mother of God and Mother of the Church, each of the participants in the pilgrimage may gain a plenary indulgence.

Conditions for gaining the Plenary Indulgence: visit to the Shrine Church, sacramental Confession (within eight days of fulfilling the other conditions), Holy Communion (within eight days of fulfilling the other conditions) and prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father (e.g., Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be; or the Creed and an Our Father) during the visit to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Cardinal Burke speaks on books at Loome Booksellers in Stillwater, MN

Cardinal Burke visited Loome's back on January 3, 2011.

Thoughts on La Crosse Catechetical Conference

Friday I attended the diocesan catechetical conference and had the great pleasure of seeing “Our Cardinal” – Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke. He spoke very beautifully on the devotional life, especially devotion to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. His eminence spoke for about 45 minutes covering the foundations for the devotional life in the Church’s magisterium as well as the mis-steps caused by the “Spirit” of Vatican II crowd and the resulting demise of any meaningful devotional life in much of the Church today. He also discussed how this lack of a devotional life has contributed to the fall of the family as a meaningful foundation for society today.

The good Cardinal then took us on a journey through the magisterium of Blessed Pope John Paul II. In this he outlined Bl. JPII’s program for recovering what had been lost which he had addressed almost from the beginning of his pontificate to the very end.

Some photos of Cdl. Burke at KC conference on end-of-life care

At a Kansas City conference on end-of-life care, Cardinal Raymond Burke said that suffering does not cause a person to have less meaning in his life, nor does it give the government the right to decide if that person should live or die.

“No matter how much a life is diminished, no matter what suffering the person is undergoing, that life demands the greatest respect and care,” Cardinal Burke, prefect of the Apostolic Signatura, told CNA.

“It's never right to snuff out a life because it's in some way under heavy burden.”

Cardinal Burke spoke July 23 to a packed auditorium of over 350 people at the Archdiocese of Kansas City, Kan. on the “mystery” of human suffering and dying for his keynote address at the “Being Faithful, Even Unto Death” conference.

A reader sent me these photos from the conference.  The woman with the Cardinal is St. Gianna's daughter; Dr. Gianna Emanuela Molla.

Cardinal Burke will be in La Crosse this weekend, at the Queen of America's Guild conference at the Shrine and at the La Crosse Diocese catechetical conference.

Big names at this year's COURAGE conference at Mundelein

I am pleased to send you the brochure for this year’s annual conference, returning to Mundelein on August 4-7. We will dedicate our time together to the memory of Fr. John Harvey, OSFS, in gratitude for his spiritual fatherhood. I have asked several of our speakers to share their reflections on Fr. Harvey’s influence in their lives and his role in leading Courage and EnCourage for almost three decades.

As you will see, we are blessed with a wonderful lineup of speakers and participants. His Eminence Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke, Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura, will offer the opening Mass, and he will give the opening talk that evening. The Cardinal was a close friend of Father Harvey, going back to the days prior to his being made Bishop of La Crosse, WI. His Eminence is one of Courage’s most faithful and strongest promoters among the Church’s shepherds.

Four other prelates will also join us. Bishop Thomas Olmstead of Phoenix will offer Mass on Friday and give a talk that morning. Longtime former Courage chaplain Bishop John LeVoir of New Ulm, MN will offer Mass on Saturday, and Bishop Thomas Paprocki of Springfield, IL will offer the closing Mass on Sunday. Longtime former Courage chaplain Bishop Mark Seitz, auxiliary bishop of Dallas, will also join us on Thursday and Friday. Fr. Benedict Groeschel and Dr. Richard Fitzgibbons will also be with us.

We have worked hard to keep the cost of the conference as low as possible: $350. If you need a scholarship, please apply for consideration by writing a letter to the main office. If you would like to provide a scholarship, please let me know or simply send your gift to the office. May God reward your generosity.
Also a few promising notes on the COURAGE apostolate.
I also want to thank Michelle Willis for her great work with our new website. We have many plans to continue to expand its content. And though he did not make the move to the new office in CT, Angelo continues to be an invaluable help as a part-time contractor. I cannot imagine not relying on his experience and expertise. Also, he and Jerry work closely together on many tasks.

Please think back for a moment to the day before you heard about Courage or EnCourage. You were very likely searching for answers, understanding, compassion, guidance and help…in short, the pastoral charity of the Church. Sadly, we know that many people are not aware of Courage and EnCourage, for a variety of reasons. To address that challenge, we are undertaking two projects.
  • First, EWTN has invited Courage to produce a 5 part series (30 minute segments) covering material very similar to what we present at a clergy study day, and to include EnCourage.
  • The second project, which I believe holds considerable promise for reaching many people, is a documentary film. We are still considering the form and scope of this work, and in time I will be grateful for suggestions and assistance, as I desire that the finished product reflect a lived-experience of Courage and EnCourage members that will offer hope for many other people. We want as wide an audience as possible.

Chaput appointment confirms Burke’s role as the Pope’s trusted man in the US

The nomination of Charles Chaput, Native American bishop from Denver, to the Archdiocese of Philadelphia confirms Raymond Leo Burke, prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, as Benedict XVI’s top advisor in the United States. One of the first signs of his role as a bridge between the influential United States Conference of Bishops and the pontifical apartment was the appointment of Timothy Michael Dolan as successor to Cardinal Edward Egan in New York.

Dolan, who is currently conducting a vigorous and efficient battle against the increasingly anti-Catholic positions of the New York Times (which a few months ago refused to publish his reply to a polemical article against the Church) is certainly in sympathy with Burke, and with the American bishops who must face new initiatives from the Obama presidency every day.

But someone (or Someone with a capital “S”) in the Vatican holds the frankness and clarity of vision of the head of the Vatican Supreme Court, in high esteem.

Someone knows - and benefits from - his deep knowledge of people and things overseas, and his ability to identify solutions in terms of candidates for dioceses that are gradually freeing themselves, in a Church still shaken by the financial and public relations aftershocks of the paedophilia scandal.

Charles Chaput was initially supposed to be appointed as Archbishop of Chicago, replacing the ill Cardinal George in the great lakeside diocese. But fortunately, the head of the diocese still feels able to manage his role with dignity and efficiency, when his illness is not acting up. Thus it is not at all certain when he will need to be replaced.

This uncertainty has not escaped many in the Curia: it is believed, especially by Burke, that Chaput will shortly be assured a diocese that will rather rapidly (some sources say a Consistory will be held at the end of this year or the beginning of the next) win him the cardinal’s berretta.

According to rumours flying around, behind the Leonine Wall during John Paul II’s pontificate, and in the first years of Benedict XVI’s pontificate, one of the great “puppeteers” of the appointment of overseas bishops was the current prefect of the Pontifical Household, Archbishop James Michael Harvey. He seems to still be hanging onto the role, but - if one believes certain sources – it has been greatly reduced with the arrival of Raymond Leo Burke. The next few months brings a deadline for many American bishops; then we will see what influence the new prefect for bishops - Canadian Marc Ouellette - and Burke himself will have in changing the episcopal face of the Stars and Stripes.

My understanding is that "puppeteer" is meant as a compliment.
